Trans Day Of Visibility: #CoolPirates

In honor of Trans Day of Visibility, the #CoolPirates campaign was launched to celebrate our Trans and Non-Binary Crewmates and Allies
Sunday March 31st is Trans Day of Visibility!
We want to celebrate trans/nonbinary creators, activists, cast and crew members, as well as allies to the community. Because we only hang out with Cool Pirates! 
Use this graphic and the hashtag  to give a well-deserved shout out!
If you are a trans/nb creator yourself, use the hashtag to promote your platform or store. We'd love to give you a boost!

Our first #CoolPirates is the one and only @puertoricaninja! 💜🤍💛🖤 Vico is a nonbinary, polyamorous, Puerto Rican actor, activist, and drag king. They’re known for their role as Jim in #OurFlagMeansDeath, Serena in Craig of the Creek, Tefe in Harley Quinn, and Hunter & Fern in Fiona and Cake. They star in the award winning queer comedy series These Thems (from today’s Watch Party!), which is free to watch on YouTube. They perform as a drag king, known for their character Vico Suave. They are a passionate activist, and support The Dru Project, the Los Angeles LGBTQ Center and LaBori Vogue. Vico pushes for the visibility of queer, nonbinary and latine folks everywhere, and openly advocates for the queer community in everything they do. They are also known for their work on Tuca & Bertie and Soojung Dreams of Fiji. #CoolPirates OFMD Crewmate coming up: Zackery Alexzander Stephens! 💛🤍💜🖤 @zackeryastephens Zackery is a Black, nonbinary comedy writer and director. They have also performed sketch comedy and improv. They served as a writer during season 2 of #OurFlagMeansDeath. They are also known for their work on “Q-Force” (Netflix) and wrote for “The Amber Ruffin Show”, a late night comedy talk show on Peacock. The show was nominated for NAACP Image, GLAAD, Primetime Emmy, and Writers Guild of America Awards, among others. It ran for 3 seasons (2021-23) before being cancelled. Zackery serves as the Acting Executive Director of Outfest. You know em, you love em, only a few more cast ally #CoolPirates: Con O’Neill ! 🏳️‍🌈 @oneill.con Con is a queer actor, musical theatre performer, and avid trans rights advocate. He is known for his role of Izzy Hands in #OurFlagMeansDeath, Val Pearson in “Uncle”, Chief Mackenzie Bock in “The Batman”, and Viktor Bryukhanov in “Chernobyl”. He has an extensive breadth of roles he has taken in his career. A few notable examples: he leant his voice as Mohg in the video game Elden Ring, and to the podcast series “Kisses in the Dark” as John Tusk. Con has been doing theater, musical and otherwise, since the start of his career in 1983. He has won both a Laurence Olivier Award and a Tony Award for “Best Actor in a Musical” for his performance in the musical “Blood Brothers”. Last but certainly not least of our #CoolPirates allies: none other than David Jenkins @dvidjenkins 🏳️‍🌈💙 David is a writer, producer, actor, & valiant ally to the queer/trans community. He is known for writing & producing #OurFlagMeansDeath and “People of Earth”. He made a cameo appearance in OFMD as “Officer Shaw”, & lent his voice to the character of Riley in the podcast series “Exerter”. You can follow him here & on Twitter @ david_jenkins__ to keep up with his current projects! 🐙🏴‍☠️ We wanted to dedicate our final #CoolPirates post to the one & only David Jenkins. Without him, there’d be no Jim and their journey, no outpouring of acceptance from the crew. None of Spanish Jackie’s trans husbands. No Ed, Stede, & crew learning to break the bonds of toxic masculinity. No promise of our beloved polycule, & certainly, none of the queer joy this show exudes in all its glory. And there’s so much more. Lest we forget to mention his support of fan creators, both online & irl. He’s lifted spirits by profiling fan works that’ve been limited by legalistic entities. For the purpose of this particular project, we wish to emphasize a significant action that was prioritized by both David & Taika Waititi: the nurturing of a writers’ room where queer, trans, & nonbinary voices of color were centered by the radical act of hiring those exact folks. As we put together the #CoolPirates series, we noted how writers we profiled gained experience & credibility during their time on the show. They moved from assistants, to credited writers of episodes. They were able to develop connections that allowed them to support each other in further opportunities. This environment that embraces & encourages diverse talent to take the lead in storytelling is one of the foremost legacies of OFMD. We’re confident David will continue to devote his career to serving the community. The networks forged & bonds created among the OFMD cast, crew, & fandom will be the catalyst for continued creative, queer projects. Though the fandom speculates, we’re certain of one thing- he’s forever “Behind us”! All of our love goes out to David: it can’t, and won’t disappear in an instant. 🐙💙
